Lake
Murray Country is a large area of South Carolina,
USA. Lake Murray is fed by the Saluda River, which
flows from upstate South Carolina near the North Carolina
state line. This 50,000 acre lake was completed in
1930 and provides hydro-electric power as well as
recreational opportunities to the midlands of South
Carolina. In addition to the public access found at
Sunset Road Recreational Area and Kempson's Bridge

of real estate on this man made lake which spans three
counties, Greenwood, Laurens, and Newberry. Ideally
located in close proximity to the state capitol Columbia
SC and only a little more than an hour from Augusta

This 11,400 acre lake was completed in 1940 following
the construction of the dam at Buzzard's Roost on

River stands for riverbanks overflowing with muscardine
in Cherokee. Enoree River Vineyard is located only
1 mile off Interstate 26 at exit 74. The muscadine
grape is the only true American grape discovered by
early explorers.
Enoree stands for "river banks overflowing with
muscadines" in the Cherokee language. Enoree
river vineyards will keep to the traditional winemaking

Japanese Gardens ...

Japanese
garden is located on Lindsay Street in Newberry, South
Carolina. This small park on Lindsay Street in Newberry
was designed in 1930 by the Wells family as a private
garden. It is open daily.
The garden contains two ponds, concrete bridges in
a Japanese style, torii, a teahouse, and a variety
of indigenous and exotic flora including lotus, Japanese
iris, water lilies, crepe myrtle, dogwood, and cypress
this park offers a lot of nature in a small space.
The garden is an on-going restoration project of the
Newberry Council of Garden Clubs. It is open daily
from 7:00 AM until 7:00 PM. [Top]

Carter
and Holmes is one of the largest orchid nurseries
in the United States. Operating since the 1940's,
the company has created and cloned some of the world's
finest hybrid orchids. Carter and Holmes' 18 greenhouses
are open for tours to the public and plants are available
for purchase.
Bill Carter and Owen Holmes began selling orchids
as cut flowers in the years after World War II, when
corsage flowers were in great demand for Valentine's
Day, Easter and Mother's Day. Today, Carter &
Holmes ship orchid plants of many genera to hobbyists
and commercial growers throughout the United States

Built
in 1881 at a cost of $30,000, the Newberry Opera House
has served as the city centerpiece for more than 126
years. In the mid-1990's, the French Gothic inspired
structure underwent a $5.5 million renovation which
restored it to its historic splendor and converted
it to a state-of-the-art performance facility.
Presenting its 10th season, the Newberry Opera House
hosts about 170 events annually ranging from chamber
music, opera, and dance performances to country-western,
big band, and beach music concerts. Headliners have
included Kathy Mattea, Lou Rawls, Crystal Gayle, Edwin
McCain, The Letterman, Vienna Boys Choir, The Moscow
Ballet, Kris Kristofferson and many, many more. [Top]
The
Newberry County Museum, located in the E. S. Coppock
house, offers an impressive collection of artifacts
and displays relative primarily to the history of
Newberry County. The Coppock house, circa 1820, stands
on five acres of land overlooking downtown Newberry,
and includes the old Water and Lights building, circa
1929. The Gauntt House, circa 1808, is also situated
on this tract of land.
The Newberry County Museum Association was organized
on May 20, 1995 with a mission to establish a Newberry

College’s 90 acre campus is located on College
street just north of Historic Downtown Newberry. With
20 majors, 25 areas of concentration, and 29 minors,
840 students and a 13:1 student/faculty ratio, Newberry
College ensures that students gain individual attention

Lynches Woods:
This
276-acre woodland area began as a project of the CCC
in the 1930's. A 4.7 mile scenic road is complimented
by hiking and equestrian trails. Recent additions
to the park include a sheltered picnic area, restrooms
and two primitive campsites. Lynches Woods serves
as the Gateway to the Upstate for the Palmetto Trail.
The park is located behind Piedmont Technical College
at the intersection of Hwy 76 Bypass and Hwy 34 Bypass.
